THIS THING CALLED LIFE

"EXTINGUISHING THE FIRES OF BURNOUT"

~ By Merryl Lentz

Ever end a relationship you've stayed in for too long? And you didn't know how drained you were until you finally walked away? That's what it's like to break up with burnout. In a relationship with burnout, you keep giving and giving and giving, and it keeps taking and taking and taking, until color and passion and joy are slowly sucked from your existence. You're constantly running on empty, feeling swamped and living in a state of perpetual exhaustion.

Burnout isn't just about depletion. It also erodes your sense of self - the self whose identity is tied to the need to keep up with an overwhelming pace.

Cutting burnout loose means saying goodbye to the habits that kept you faithful to it: Skipping sleep, downplaying stress, missing meals, ignoring discomfort and pretending you're fine.

The thing about running on empty is that eventually your engine shuts down. In the real world, engine damage can be disastrous. It can be the same for you when you keep company with burnout: Depression, anxiety, emotional withdrawal, difficulty meeting obligations and chronic exhaustion are just some of the results of burnout.

Burnout is sneaky. It's a gradual process and can creep up on you. The symptoms are subtle at first but then escalate. Burnout can go through these phases:

• Stage 1

During this stage, you feel energized, motivated and productive. Stress feels manageable.

• Stage 2

Stress escalates, and you start to neglect sleep. You feel anxious, irritable, fatigued. You have trouble making decisions and focusing. You often become frustrated.

• Stage 3

You feel apathetic and are always tired. You may withdraw, procrastinate and feel cynical as you wonder if what you're doing has any meaning. You may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol.

• Stage 4

During this phase, burnout ramps up. You obsess over problems and begin experiencing stress-related health issues like chronic headaches. You're tormented by self-doubt and start isolating yourself.

• Stage 5

Burnout has reached the breaking point. Your wellbeing has nosedived. You're constantly depressed, emotionally numb and incessantly physically and mentally exhausted. Symptoms become part of daily life.

Burnout can be caused by a job, but it can also be triggered by things like stress from relationships, caregiver roles, financial uncertainties and raising kids.

Our society values people who "go above and beyond," "push through," "try harder" and "go the extra mile." These expectations can pressure someone into burnout. There are also certain personality traits that may make someone more vulnerable to burnout:

• Neuroticism

• Perfectionism

• Competitiveness

• Ambitiousness

• People-pleasing

• High self-criticism

• Extreme conscientiousness

• Insecurity

When rest, health and mental wellbeing become luxuries instead of necessities, it's time to douse the inferno of burnout.

"Burnout is not about giving too much of yourself
but trying to give from a place where nothing is left."
~ Brené Brown

             SIGNS OF LOVE

"BURNOUT AND PEACE"

Hello Beautiful People!

1. Burnout is a condition of consciousness - not your identity!

In Science of Mind, burnout would not be seen as something that defines you, but as a temporary mental and emotional state created by patterns of thought - over-identification with effort, pressure, or lack. You are not “a burned-out person”; you are someone experiencing a misalignment with your inner truth.

2. Peace is your natural state!

A core teaching of Science of Mind is that peace, wholeness, and harmony are already inherent within you. So “reclaiming your peace” is not about creating something new - it is about remembering and returning to what is already there.

3. “Breaking up” = shifting belief and releasing attachment!

Instead of fighting burnout, Science of Mind would encourage:

• Releasing the belief that struggle equals worth

• Letting go of over-responsibility or perfectionism

• Choosing new thoughts that affirm ease, support, and balance

In this framework, you don’t battle burnout - you withdraw your agreement with the mindset that sustains it.

4. Use spiritual mind treatment (affirmative prayer)

A practical step would be something like:

“I recognize that peace is the truth of my being. I release all belief in strain and exhaustion. I accept a life of balance, support, and ease. I am restored.”

This isn’t just positive thinking - it’s considered a way of aligning your mind with universal creative intelligence.

5. Inspired action follows inner alignment.

Science of Mind is not passive. Once you shift your inner state, you are guided to:

• Rest when needed (without guilt)

• Set boundaries

• Choose work and rhythms that feel life-giving

In short:

"Breaking up with burnout" is not about escaping your life - it is about changing your relationship with it. When your thinking aligns with peace, your outer experience begins to reflect that.

This is truly a Sign LOVE!

With much LOVE and Blessings,

~ Karin
